Mostly, baseball only seems melancholy. Sometimes, though, it really is.

Last year, on May 17, Daisuke Matsuzaka came to town on a Triple-A rehab assignment for the Boston Red Sox. Dice-K, as he has long been known, was in the final year of a six-year, fifty-two-million-dollar contract, which he signed in December of 2006. There was much cloak-and-dagger intrigue surrounding the bidding war for his services that autumn.

The Dog Days of Summer

Saturday, June 22, 2013

You’d expect the army of Labs adorned with bandanas, cool as Wil Myers flying first class to Tampa. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen? Not so much.

“If I tell you all I know, it would be a great story, but I won’t be able to.”

That’s how Durham Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo led off his postgame interview after his team clubbed the Buffalo Bisons, 10-2. Then he smiled that gnomic smile he flashes when he has news or opinions that will get him in trouble if shared. He followed that with one of his tried-and-true near-clichés—one I’ve heard him use countless times before—and then proceeded with his usual unpacking of the game we had just seen.
